The Priceless Sister

Rumor Had It

Rumor had it a nun was moving into Community Village. I couldn’t wait to talk to her. I was no Catholic, but I had known a nun or two in my past.

When I met Sister Laurene, I couldn’t have liked her more. She has the kind of smile that floods her face and makes her eyes sparkle and has the most wonderful sense of humor! As she does with so many, we hit it off right away. So approachable that I found the nerve to ask her a question I had wanted to ask any nun since the early 1990s: “Have you ever seen the movie Sister Act?” “Why, yes”, she said (for the record, she liked it very much)!

After Sister Laurene moved into Community Village, I visited her room often. Such a merciful addition to our census; always humble and kind and a true servant of Christ. One morning, I came to work feeling quite sad about a personal matter. I felt the urge to go to Sister’s room and hastily made my way there. We talked for a minute and through my tears I told her what was bothering me. She so graciously took my hand in hers and began to pray. She told God that because I was such a nice person on the outside, I must be a diamond on the inside. I think it was the kindest prayer ever uttered for me. I dried my tears and held her close before making my way to start my day’s work. These days, I don’t get the opportunity to visit Sister Laurene as much as I would like, but I know if I need her, she’s right down the hall. She gave me a teardrop diamond cut crystal (it’s plastic) which I keep in my jewelry box. It has no monetary value at all, but – just like her – it’s priceless.

Randy’s Salsa Factory

This time of year you’ll find Randy – our resident gardener – outside digging in the dirt getting his “salsa factory” up and running once again. And he loves every bit of it! His sister always helps him with the plant shopping, making sure he’s got at least one of each favorite pepper (Randy’s got several of those)! From Cayenne to Jalapeño and even the Habanero! Sizzle! Keith – our grounds guru – works up the plot of garden… then Randy’s in his glory. The very hardest part is waiting. And waiting some more.

Finally, when all that green starts turning red, Randy dons his chef hat and creates his very own salsa concoction that he’s always happy to share.

Fair warning, though: make sure you know if it’s his hot or mild version before you taste test!
